Microsoft issued a warning to South African’s urging them to be wary about a phone scam where perpetrators claim to be Microsoft / Computer Technicians. If someone cold calls you claiming to be a computer technician (support person etc.) and that your computer is at risk, ignore it. They usually urge you to install “security” software or get you to part with personal information.
A few basic pieces of advice can help local consumers from being taken in by this and other scams:
- Never provide personal information, such as credit card or bank details, over the telephone;
- Never install anything, visit any web sites or follow any other instruction given to you by a stranger on the phone;
- Ensure that your operating system is fully updated and that any security updates have been downloaded; and
- Make sure your system is protected by strong passwords, which are changed regularly.
